Symptoms of Trauma
After experiencing trauma, it is not uncommon to avoid reminders of the event which could include activities, places and people or avoiding talking or thinking about what occurred.
Many people notice changes to their emotions, feelings and thoughts after experiencing something traumatic. These might include feeling detached, hopeless or numb, having negative thoughts, or experiencing heightened emotional responses.
Flashbacks or Nightmares
Children in particular might experience nightmares following a traumatic event. The frightening dreams may or may not be related to the event itself. When people have memories during which they feel they are reliving the event, as if it were happening all over again, this is referred to as a flashback.
Hypervigilance is when you are in a elevated state where you are anticipating and preparing for a threat. You may notice you are always on guard, feel frightened or are easily started. This is a common response for people who have experienced trauma.
